The Problem with Pig Poop

Pig poop is an actual problem messing up our environment. These pigs can’t naturally grab the phosphorus they need from their feed, so they need phosphorus supplements, and guess whose job is that. Pig owners pump ‘em full of the supplements which also means their waste is basically a phosphorus bomb that ends up in our water, killing fish, messing up the oxygen in our water ecosystems, and even adding on to the whole greenhouse effect mess. But thank god biotech came through and fixed the shitty problem (literally and figuratively).

Back in the old times, pig farmers tried keeping their pigs healthy and the planet clean by giving them animal leftovers that had extra phosphorus while also tossing in supps of the enzyme phytase to unlock the phosphorus from their food. But these farmers thought a little and found a few problems. The animal leftovers could bring in prion diseases, and the supplements weren’t any way a cheap deal. But now with biotech we’ve got these “phytase transgenic pigs”, pigs that are genetically pimped out to spit bacterial phytase, so they drop dung that’s low in phosphorus levels. They call these guys Enviropigs. Enviropigs = 🐖🌎✌

  3. Hi Vanshika! I really liked how you used informal language, such as 'guys' and 'thank god'. It made the textbook lesson a lot easier to comprehend and follow long. You did a great job :)
