totalitarian tunes ft. jennifer lopez

analyzing an article from The Onion

One of Jennifer Lopez's most recent projects is her new movie "This is Me...Now". And expectingly so, she had a couple controversial remarks in her movie promotion which press made a treat out of. In the article above, which I honestly found very enjoyable to read, the author uses a sardonic tone all throughout the piece by showing scorn towards the inflated egos of celebrities. Jennifer Lopez's movie might be important to her, but it is nowhere near important in the minds of society in consideration to events going on right now, and this article mocks just that. Lopez exaggerates and says "glorious empire built from blood, sweat, and iron", and this shows the pedestal she puts herself on. She believes her projects have a significance that she exaggerates to the point of absurdity.

She also tries being humorous, but it is just insensitive and ironic when she says "I can't wait for you to experience this totalitarian dictatorship". There is a contrast between the glamorous facade of Lopez's projects and the apparently dark themes being portrayed according to The Onion. The author continues this mocking of JLo by inserting a parody of her announcement, "when I started my journey as a performer, I never could've imagines that one day I would be standing here ready to unleash a reign of merciless terror on anyone who failed to comply". This parody effectively mimics the exaggerated language used by celebrities in announcements and promotions, the author of the article also uses this to convey to readers how celebrities over-value themselves and to criticize celebrities view of self-importance and celebrity culture.

  1. I think your title is nice as you say "ft. Jennifer Lopez" as she is a musician.

  2. I love how you explained the way the article uses a humorous tone to create a parody effect. I also liked the evidence you used to back your explanation.

  3. I like how you formatted this similarly to the article from The Onion, and I also read this article. Towards the end, I like how the last couple lines of the second paragraph mimic a conclusion of some sort, and you explain how this parody relates in this context, and the purpose it aims to convey to the audience.

  4. I like how you outlined how each ironic phrase contributes to the author's view on Lopez's musical. It was also nice how you connected it to a more broad idea at the end.
